Joon Ma Rock Climbing and My Four-Year-Old! Since having my son four years ago, the number of days Ive spent climbing every year has dropped precipitouslyfrom over 100 days at one point to zero. Climbing has always been one of my favorite things to do with my husband, but these days weve substituted playdates and picnics in the park for mountain adventures. Not a bad tradebut still, Ive missed climbing. Living in New York City and working a demanding job made me appreciate all the things it has to offer: the beauty, the companionship, the physical effort, the mental challengeeven the fear. Raising my son, I looked forward to a time when I could introduce him to the cliffs, once he was old enough.
Invite your neighbors or friends, Dont underestimate the power of community. Invite your kids friends over to \"camp out\" as well. There are some kids today that never get the opportunity to camp and learn new and exciting adventure like those that the great outdoors offers. The more the merrier is the motto when it comes to camping in the backyard.
Take a pack with all the essentials for being well prepared in the wilderness. Put everything that needs to stay dry in re-seal-able plastic bags and take a small towel with you for wiping your face dry when you stop for breaks Don’t use rain as an excuse for not going for a hike. Just be sure to go well prepared and have the essentials to keep dry and warm and you will be surprised at how much you enjoy hiking in the rain.
